The grasslands of the Bílé Karpaty Mts. (White Carpathians) are famous for their species richness. In comparison with similar grasslands over Europe the species richness is lower at scales up to about 100 cm2 but in larger plots, i.e. above 5 m2, higher values are attained. Multivariate analysis (CCA) and correlation analysis based on 28 plots suggest that the species richness is nearly independent of the chemical composition of the soils as well as of aboveground living biomass. However, a strong negative effect of litter and standing dead on species richness was found. A great number of species is represented by a few big individuals whereas most species with abundant individuals, or ramets are small-sized. The importance of these findings for species coexistence and grasslands management is discussed.
