The alder carr in the Natural Monument "Na bahně" was investigated in 1924, 1962, 1980 and 1987 - 1995. The peat bog in the centre of the reservation was surrounded by an alder carr in 1924. Between 1924 and 1962 the peat bog was overgrown by Alnus glutinosa. This resulted in elimination of peat bog species and in changes in species composition of the alder carr. It follows from a comparison of four fytosociological sets of relevés that the number of plant species typical for sunny habitats, for low content of soil nitrogen and low pH decreased. The number of species indicating very wet habitats decreased whereas the number of species indicating very dry habitats increased. Tree layer of the alder carr is formed by A. glutinosa and Betula pubescens. No saplings of these species were observed since the late 80s. Under the canopy of the above tree species suppressed individuals of Ulmus minor and Tilia cordata are growing. On drier habitats they may replace the dominant canopy species in future.
