The experimental area where management experiments have been carried out since 1989 is situated in a meadow with scattered <i>Quercus</i> spp. trees, at an altitude of 440 m a.s.l., on a SW faced slope with an inclination of 5 10°. The following species attain a mean cover of 2 % or more in a typical species-rich stand: <i>Bromus erectus</i> (21 %), <i>Carex montana</i> (16 %), <i>Molinia arundinacea</i> (6 %), <i>Cirsium pannonicum</i> (4 %), <i>Prunella grandiflora</i> (3 %), <i>Viola hirta</i> (2 %), <i>Potentilla alba</i> (2 %), and <i>Brachypodium pinnatum</i> (2 %) (estimated in 25 plots, 0.5 square m each, in June 1998; Klimea, unpubl.). Traditional management includes mowing once a year, in July or August. More details on species composition of the meadows and their abiotic environment is given in Jongepierová et al. (1994), Klimea (1999) and Klimea et al. (1995). </font></p> <p align="center">&nbsp;</p> <p style="margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 30" align="left"><font face="verdana" size="1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b> Ohrazení near eské Budjovice</b></font></p> <p><img border="1" src="Ohr.jpg" align="right" hspace="30" width="147" height="240" vspace="0"></p> <p style="margin-left: 20; margin-right: 190; margin-top: 0" align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="1">(2) The collection of plant traits is performed in a species-rich (up to 30 species per 0.25 squre m) wet meadow located 10 km south-east of eské Budjovice, Czech Republic, 48° 57 N, 14°36 E, at 510 m a.s.l., situated close to the village of Ohrazení. In the past the meadows were regularly mown once or twice a year. This was stopped at the end of the 1980s. The meadow was not mown again until the start of experimental studies in 1994. The following species attained a mean above-ground biomass of 2 % or more in mown and unfertilized plots in June 2004: <i>Agrostis tenuis</i> (2.1 %), <i>Briza media</i> (3.3 %), <i>Deschampsia cespitosa</i> (2.6 %), <i>Festuca rubra</i> (3.5 %), <i>Holcus lanatus</i> (2.2 %), <i>Molinia caerulea</i> (26.8 %), <i>Nardus stricta</i> (4.8 %), <i>Sieglingia decumbens</i> (2.6 %), <i>Carex pallescens</i> (3.6 %), <i>Carex panicea</i> (2.1 %), <i>Carex umbrosa</i> (2.4 %), <i>Juncus effusus</i> (5.7 %), <i>Betonica officinalis</i> (2.5 %), <i>Cirsium palustre</i> (2.8 %), <i>Galium boreale</i> (2.7 %), <i>Potentilla erecta</i> (4.7 %) (estimated in 50x50 cm plots). More details on species composition and abiotic environment of the meadow is given in Weiterová (2004) and Janeèek (2005).</font></p> <p style="margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 30" align="left"><font face="verdana" size="1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b> Meadow complex in the }elezné hory Mts.</b></font></p> <p><img border="1" src="zelezky.jpg" align="right" hspace="30" width="147" height="240" vspace="0"></p> <p style="margin-left: 20; margin-right: 190; margin-top: 0" align="justify"><font face="Verdana" size="1">(3) The }elezné hory Protected Landscape Area (Iron Mountains, East Bohemia, Czech Republic) is formed by a mosaic of forests, meadows, arable land and rural areas at altitudes of 260 to 668 m a.s.l. The wet meadows show gradients of soil moisture, fertility, soil reaction and hence productivity. In our pilot study (Malatková in prep.) we chose the target meadows according to their position along the major environmental gradients. Habitat characteristics were estimated by making fytosociological relevés and using Ellenberg s indicator values for nitrogen, moisture and soil reaction. The target meadows are spread in a rectangle 8.22 x 19.7 km large. The area lies in the eastern part of the }elezné hory Protected Landscape Area among the towns SlatiHany (N), Libice nad Doubravou (W), }dírec nad Doubravou (S), and Hlinsko v echách (E). The size of the meadows varies from 0.15 to 15 hectares. Their vegetation is classified as the <i>Calthion, Molinion, Caricion fuscae, Sphagno recurvi  Caricion canescentis, Violion caninae</i> alliances of the C-M system.</font></p> <br><p style="margin-left: 0; margin-right: 0; margin-top: 30" align="left"><font face="verdana" size="1">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b> Map of the localities (green-red ones) distributed within the }elezné hory Mts.</b></font></p> <p><img border="1" src="zelhory/mapka.jpg" align="left" hspace="20" width="530" height="750" vspace="0"></p> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>
