The ‘Gourmet’ R library project

Make a decent home made PIZZA

Inviting people home for lunch/dinner is now a bit easier with the R functions below, i.e. created to compute ingredients and select tasteful recipes for your friends. One day, these functions will be together into an R library called ‘Gourmet’. Let us know if you have a function for this library!

Making a good pizza at home is always a guarantee of fun & good eating. Together with Jodi N. Price, David Sanchez and Maria Majekova we made a very “complicated” R function that gives you the desired proportion of ingredients needed for a number of scenarios. You can input in the function: the number of people expected, the male/female ratio, the hunger factor and “mysterious” the Mediterranean factor. We are also collecting data to validate the suggested function. Just contact us and tell if the quantity of ingredients suggested gave too much or too few dough. :)

For preparing the dough you can also look at this video link.

Most important: do not put ketchup on your pizza!!!

David (Pesca) Sanchez is an astonishing tortilla maker (and a very good ecologist too). Here an R function tortilla that gives you a good proportion of ingredients for preparing a good tortilla (the tortilla is the spanish omelette with potatoes). In the function you can input: the number of people expected, the hunger factor, the sponginess (i.e. how  juicy you want the tortilla), if you want to add onions or not and most important, if you will have tortilla only as an appetizer (less quantity) or as the main course (more). For preparing the tortilla you can look at this video link (although you can cut the the potatoes a bit smaller and cook them longer in a normal pan). But.....do NOT NEVER do it as it is shown here :-).

Falafel

Have you ever tried home made falafel? they are very easy to make and perfect for inviting people home. Together with David (Pesca) we made a function that give a good proportion of ingredients depending on the number of people expected, if you are using falafels only as appetizer or as a main dish, and if you want them spicy or not. After grinding all ingredients together, just make some balls and fry them. After serve falafel with some salad and some dipping sauce (e.g. yogurt, hummus etc.).

Choba - chocolate banana brownies

Let’s have something sweet! here a nice combination of ingredients proposed by Lena (Neuenkamp) to make some delicious brownies at home. Awesome! In the R script (choba_brownies.R) you will be able to chose among different options and ingredients to bake your brownies simply as you like them best. BTW, we are not responsible for the effects of other ingredients you might wish to add to this recipe. :)

How a salmorejo should look like

Salmorejo - a tasty spanish chilled tomato soup

Many people know gaspacho, the cold summer soup many Spanish love. But here is a similar, and possibly even tastier recipe of Salmorejo. Indra de Castro provided a funny script (salmorejo.r) for it. You can see a video how to prepare it here. The function will allow to input the amount of people, how romantic you plan to be, if you want or not ham into it and many other interesting information.
